What is a kettlebell?

Developed over 200 years ago in Russia, the kettlebell is an extremely effective tool.  The way you use it in class is nothing like any other exercise.  The movements are such that you get both cardio and strength.  Usually you can only achieve both of those goals by participating in full-contact sports like wrestling or intense swimming.


Kettlebells are unlike modern workouts with machines and free weights.  Machines and most free-weight exercises are based on muscle isolation.  This will give the muscle a “pump”, which is great if you’re a body builder, but not if you’re just trying to lose weight and move better.

Why '39 Minute Workout'?

The reason we call it 39 Minute Workout is because it’s fast, fun, and effective.  Kettlebells are the perfect tool for that goal.

With kettlebells, we move the way the body is meant to move.  They mimic athletic movements, like running, picking up heavy things, getting up and down off the floor and so on.  You will look better and move better very quickly by using them, because they’re extremely efficient.


Are kettlebells bad for my back?

Let me emphatically say, NO! kettlebells are one of the single best tools to improve your back.  Now if you have a slipped disc or severe scoliosis, that may be another issue.  But most people’s back pain has far more to do with how they move than an actual injury.  Most back pain is from a weak core, tight muscles, or poor movement patterns.  Kettlebells done CORRECTLY will eliminate all those issues.


I’ve had a ton of people come to us with a history of back problems.  I was one of them.  Knock on wood (or just swing a kettlebell), I haven’t had an issue with my back ONCE since I started using them four years ago.  And before that, I hurt my low back at least twice a year to the point that it was painful to walk.


If you have a history of back problems, please do come talk with us.  We have a Physical Therapist who works closely with us (Kelly Sykes at Touchstone Therapy) who can help evaluate your readiness for class.  If he feels that you aren’t ready for training with us, he can put together a treatment program to get your back (shoulder, knee, etc.) healed and ready to exercise again.


I will tell you that some doctors, out of ignorance, will look at the kettlebell swing and tell you it’s dangerous.  It is as dangerous as picking up a kleenex off the ground.  Do it with your spine in the wrong position, and you will likely get hurt.  Learn to pick things up right, and you’ll probably never have an issue again.  It has nothing to do with the weight, it’s all about form.

Can I lose weight with kettlebells alone?

Very few people will lose weight with working out alone.  Men are more likely to experience weight loss with kettlebells and less dietary changes.  Most women have to couple good nutrition with your workouts to see big progress.  That’s why we’ve put together so much nutrition support and accountability to help you reach your goal.


Having said that, you can and will see changes in your body in the first month that will be far more impressive than diet alone.  Our clients report seeing rapid changes in their core, butt, and overall firmness of their body.  Many people even drop sizes before they see changes on the scale.  This is why putting together good eating with our 39 Minute Workout brings fabulous changes.
